Bloodlines
- Kekkai Genkai -- Combined Chakra -- Clan Abilities -
Bloodline limits, or "Kekkai Genkai" are genetic abilities carried from family member to family member, from generation to generation. Some families contain weird and often extremely useful abilities, and ninja villages fight over, purge, or praise these abilities accordingly. Wars are fought over them, and the increased power of having a Kekkai Genkai is not always worth being considered to be "different" by most, if not all, of your fellow shinobi. This page lists all the different Bloodline Limits currently shown in the show as well as any made by the characters of the game, although it's certainly not all of them. You're very encouraged to talk to me about inventing your own, as these are certainly not all that are out there. In addition, game specs for each will be listed.
There are additionally a few somewhat unique families in Konoha, that tend to use special fighting strategies and special Jutsu as standard. These are not Kekkai Genkai, but are interesting enough that brief histories of each will be posted here as well.
Kekkai Genkai
Byakugan
--------
The Byakugan is the highly secretive weapon of the Hyuuga clan of Konoha. Translated as "White Eye," the Byakugan appears as a white pupil and the veins leading up to the eye are intensified and visible. While the Byakugan is incapable of most of what the Sharingan is, the Byakugan surpasses the Sharingan in terms of insight.
The Byakugan is mainly used complementary to taijutsu. A person with the Byakugan has a 360 degree field of vision, except for a small blind spot that is difficult if not impossible to pinpoint. Byakugan users can passively detect anything that moves around them in a 50 foot radius, making them close-range combat experts. When actively used with chakra, the Byakugan can see through most matter over distances proven to be up to and past a mile.
In addition to its external vision, the Byakugan allows the user to view the chakra inner coil system of individuals, which controls the flow of chakra throughout their body. Using the noble house of Hyuuga's Jyuken fighting style, the Byakugan can exhibit superior control of their own chakra and use it to clog the exit holes of the opponent's chakra (known as "tenketsu"). Seasoned Byakugan users are able to deliver a fatal, single blow just as easily as cripple an opponent.
There are several techniques developed specifically for Byakugan users, which complement and make use of its abilities. One of these techniques is the Kaiten, which works to eliminate (temporarily) the blind spot of the Byakugan. There are many other attacks, and it is unknown whether the limit of the Byakugan has yet been reached.
For Game Use:
The Hyuuga's Byakugan will be classed in one of two states. "Apprentice" or "Mastered". Each form confers the following penalties and bonuses. Hyuuga must take the Wind affinity at joining.
Apprentice - Standard Byakugan abilities. Costs 5 temp stamina per battle.
Mastered - Improved Byakugan abilities. Ability to exert chakra from any point on the body. Costs 5 temp stamina per battle.
Kaigan
----------
The Kaigan, or "enlightened eye", is a pupil bloodline native to the hidden village of Grass, and one of their most powerful assets. Unlike most pupil related bloodlines, the Kaigan actually takes the appearance of a third eye, placed in the middle of the ninjas forehead. The name is derived from the interesting way in which the Kaigan eye "sees" things. Kaigan eyes do not see light in the way normal eyes do, or chakra in the way the Sharingan and Byakugan do. Instead, they see the spiritual world, the thoughts and emotions and feelings of those around them. These things take the form of colors the shape of the people and animals being seen, which has several advantages.
Not only can a Kaigan user know the mood and intentions of another person just by looking at them, by closing their real eyes they can tell where people and animals are behind solid objects, or whether or not a person is a clone (with only the Kaigan open, only things with emotions can be seen). Furthermore, if the user of the Kaigan manages to look into another persons eyes with it, they can exert their chakra in such a way to, to a limited extent, read anothers mind. Actual worded out thoughts won't be gleaned in this way, but the gist of them will, making users of the Kaigan nearly impossible to surprise.
In addition to that, it is said that when the Kaigan eye is closed, it looks inward, on the thoughts of the person using it. Closing the Kaigan eye focuses the ninjas attentiveness, much like meditation does. Kaigan users are said to have an enormous amount of common sense, and do not lose their cool in a situation easily. Closing the Kaigan eye also, to an extent, heightens the other, non-sight senses. Finally, if two Kaigan users stare into each others third eye for a few seconds, they can share thoughts and memories, as if for the time their eyes are connected they are thinking out of the same mind. This is a quick and excellent way to transfer information, but can also be quite traumatizing, as only one ninja has to be willing for the transfer to occur.
For game use:
The Kaigan user must spend 5 temp stamina per battle due to the eye's chakra draining properties. Two Kaigan members may make a special "Kaigan Training" action, in which one may teach the other any of their jutsu.
Sharingan
---------
The Sharingan (literally "Copy Wheel Eye") is a special type of pupil that naturally occurs in some members of the Uchiha clan, which allegedly evolved from the Byakugan of the Hyuuga clan.
This multi-faceted pupil allows the character to perform several feats. First, the Sharingan's most well-known capability is its ability to memorize any technique that it is a witness to. It can memorize not only ninjutsu techniques, but also taijutsu and genjutsu as well (with some difficulties). The Sharingan also provides a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent, although this is shrugged off without huge difficulty by experienced ninjas and is nothing compared to more powerful genjutsu. Third, it can see through most illusionary techniques such as Bunshin. Finally, it has the ability to predict (and copy to an extent) the opponent's movement as well as allowing the ninja to track high-speed objects with increased clarity.
The weakness of the Sharingan is that it drains chakra quickly. In order to copy a jutsu, one has to have the physical ability to perform the technique. For example, the user must have the needed amount of chakra, stamina, agility, or strength in order to perform the ability. In addition to physical skill, the Sharingan cannot copy any other bloodline abilities or summon a creature the user has not made a contract with. Finally, the Sharingan cannot copy skills that occur purely by Chakra manipulation, such as Rasengan or Physique Modification. It needs to have hand seals or some physical movement involved to be copied.
The Sharingan does not automatically appear from birth in a user. Instead, it will usually appear when the user is in a life-threatening situation, where the power of the Sharingan will save the person. After this first appearance, the user can then call up the Sharingan any time he or she pleases. The power of the Sharingan is judged through the number of comma-like dots (tomoe) in the person's eye. It is not unheard of for a Sharingan user to have different amounts of dots in each eye. Eventually, an "adult" and fully matured Sharingan has three dots in each eye.
For game use:
The Uchiha's Sharingan will be classed in one of four states. "Hidden", "Immature", "Mature" or "Mangekyou". Each form confers the following penalties and bonuses. Uchiha must take the Fire affinity at joining.
Hidden - No penalties or bonuses.
Immature - Standard Sharingan abilities. Costs 5 temp stamina per battle.
Mature - Improved Sharingan abilities. Will learn jutsu with hand seals the caster sees after a battle. Costs 10 temp stamina per battle.
Mangekyou - Further improved Sharingan abilities. Effective immunity to Genjutsu. Costs 1 perm stamina and 10 temp stamina per battle.
Shikomuyatsu
-------------
The Kaguya clan was responsible in the past for starting war against the Ninja of the Mist Village. Despite their bloodline limit (meaning "Corpse Bone Pulse"), they were almost entirely wiped out. The Kaguya clan has the frightening ability to manipulate their bones, protruding them out of the body, shooting them from the fingertips, or creating a layer of bone under the skin to serve as armor. These bodies are often referred to as being "perfect" and there is no pain involved in using this ability.
The users of the Shikotsumyaku are not limited to a set number of bones in their body. The offense of a Shikotsumyaku is usually related to taijutsu as with just a thought any point on the body can become as sharp as a sword's point. The Kaguya clan's most powerful techniques would be its many dances, which are both deadly and beautiful at the same time.
For Game Use:
The Kaguya clan member must spend 5 temp stamina at the end of any battle in which they use their abilities. Because their bone weapons are designed perfectly for the user, and because they are the strongest and lightest weapons in existance, users of Shikomuyatsu always operate at 1 higher Taijutsu than normal in combat, to a maximum of 11. Kaguya members must take the Earth affinity at joining.
Combined Chakra Bloodlines
Crystal nature chakra
----------
This bloodline was almost entirely wiped out in the last war, and there are many legends about its power, with few active users to date. Combining the Water and Fire chakra natures, these ninja can create powerful Crystal jutsu, hardened pink crystals being used for their techniques. Crystal techniques are generally more difficult than most, but have some of the most spectacular effects on the battlefield. Like most combination chakra bloodlines, Crystal technique users are able to transform items around them into hardened crystal, an ability usable for both offense and defense.
For game use:
This bloodline drains 5 temporary stamina at the end of every battle. The user counts as having the Fire, Water and Crystal affinities, and does not need to learn the Change in Chakra Nature jutsu for any techniques of these three elements. They learn all Water and Fire nature techniques one day faster than other ninja. Only people with this bloodline may learn Shouton techniques. They may use Guren as a clan trainer.
Ice nature chakra

One of four known types of combination chakra, Ice nature chakra combines Wind and Water chakra to create more powerful techniques. This Kekkai Genkai is normally found in the hidden village of Mist, and is slightly more common than the other combination chakra natures. Like most bloodlines of this type, people with this ability can form wind, water, and ice freely, and learn ninjutsu of those natures extremely easily. They can form weapons from ice out of the moisture in the air, without using any hand seals. In addition, one interesting side effect of this bloodline is the ability to create hand seals for any type of ninjutsu using only one hand.
For game use:
This bloodline drains 5 temporary stamina at the end of every battle. The user counts as having the Water, Wind and Ice affinities, and does not need to learn the Change in Chakra Nature jutsu for any techniques of these three elements. They learn all Wind and Water nature techniques one day faster than other ninja. Only people with this bloodline may learn Hyouton techniques. They may use Ishizuka as a clan trainer.
Magma nature chakra
----------
A bloodline that has more or less gone into hiding, this extremely rare group uses Fire and Earth chakra to create a devastating Magma nature, using techniques that can boil metal and dissolve water. Magma techniques are extremely powerful and devastating, but used mostly for offense, with few defensive capabilities.
For game use:
This bloodline drains 5 temporary stamina at the end of every battle. The user counts as having the Fire, Earth and Magma affinities, and does not need to learn the Change in Chakra Nature jutsu for any techniques of these three elements. They learn all Earth and Fire nature techniques one day faster than other ninja. Only people with this bloodline may learn Youton techniques. This bloodline does not have a clan trainer.
Wood nature chakra
----------
Much rarer than most of the combined chakra elements, wood nature chakra was made famous by the first Hokage, who joined with the Uchiha to end the great ninja war and bring the current peace to the world. It is a combination of Water and Earth chakra, and like most bloodlines of this type, people with wood nature chakra can form water, earth and wood freely, and are experts at ninjutsu of those natures. They can convert their bodies into wood, using this tool both for offense and defense. Further, users of wood nature chakra have been known to have a strange affinity with tailed beasts, and are experts at sealing jutsu.
For game use:
This bloodline drains 5 temporary stamina at the end of every battle. The user counts as having the Earth, Water and Wood affinities, and does not need to learn the Change in Chakra Nature jutsu for any techniques of these three elements. They learn all Earth and Water nature techniques one day faster than other ninja. Only people with this bloodline may learn Mokuton techniques. They may use Yamato as a clan trainer.
Clan Abilities
Aburame
----------
The use of Kikai Bugs is nearly exclusive to the noble Aburame clan of Konoha. After birth, small Kikai (Destruction) bugs are introduced into the user's body system. These Kikai bugs enjoy a symbiotic relationship with their host. In exchange for being able to feed off of their host's chakra to a degree, the Kikai bugs offer their protection to the host.
The use of Kikai bugs is varied and complex to those who do not practice it. The Kikai bugs have shown themselves to be fascinating forms of tracking, Bunshin, and attack. From being able to drain an opponent to chakraless near-death in a few moments to creating masterful traps, the Aburame clan's Kikai bugs are not to be underestimated. Aburame usually have the Earth affinity.
Akimichi
--------------
Mastered and guarded by the noble Akimichi clan, the Baika no Jutsu literally means "Multi-Size Technique." Although many young Akimichi boys and girls are teased for their size, it is often to their advantage upon maturation. This is a secret set of jutsu that use the individual's large weight and size and multiply it for use in specialised jutsu. The Baika no Jutsu is largely related to taijutsu combat, yet while this may seem less than the more celebrated taijutsu traditions such as jyuken, the Akimichi's abilities are surprising and terrific in their own right. Rumors abound of a secret food-related trump card of the Akimichi clan that is only revealed when there is dire need of its abilities, but this remains just an unfounded rumor. Akimichi usually have the water affinity.
Inuzuka
--------
The use of Ninken has been related to the Inuzuka clan for many years. These ninja-dogs are often given to a member of the clan at birth or in their youth, creating a bond between the two unlike any other. The members of this clan are capable of communicating with their canine companions, allowing the members to gain information from their companion's heightened senses. Inuzuka individuals are also usually capable of generating chakra in their nose, increasing their sense of smell a thousandfold. Inuzuka usually have the Lightning affinity.
The jutsu of a person who uses a Ninken is often related to involving their partner, such as the Gatsuuga and Beast Clone techniques.
Inoue
----------
The Inoue weapon masters are some of the most dangerous foes in all of Konoha, using everything from swords to spears to maces and bows all in the span of a blink of an eye. The Inoue are masters of weapons scrolls as well, creating complicated seal gloves that can summon or unsummon their weapons at will. While they do not use ultra powerful jutsu as often as other families, their quick wits and easily transformable weapons make them deadly in close combat, and very feared amongst the enemies of Konoha.
Karukaru
----------
The Karukaru have a long lived rivalry with the Hyuuga. Both are masters of martial arts and close combat, and both believe in using their Taijutsu skills above all else in a fight. However, while the Hyuuga have their bloodline backing all of their actions, the Karukaru have spent decades creating jutsu to combat the Hyuugas Jyuuken. Masters of their own chakra, they can make their bodies as tough as steel, and protect themselves against hostile ninjutsu and genjutsu, just by mastering their own chakra.
Nara
----------
An old and established ninja family in Konoha, the Nara family goes by day as a group of deer herders and rangers, but they are also effective ninjas for the hidden leaf. The Nara clan techniques use shadows to restrain, immobilize and kill their targets. The Nara family member uses chakra to move their shadow at high speeds, able to control the target when their shadow connects to the enemies. Experts at this craft are even able to lift their shadows off the ground as a physical object, stabbing at the enemy. Naturally, Nara family members are much more dangerous as the sun approaches sunrise and sunset, when shadows are larger and easier to manipulate.
Puppet jutsu
----------
While not normally contained within any one clan, the hidden village of sand has a small cult devoted to the use of Puppet techniques. They create devilish puppets of steel and wood, with hidden weapons all over their bodies, and then they use specialized chakra strings to control them in combat. The lightness of the puppets and the strength of the strings enables them to fly and be used at long range, allowing the puppet master to defend themselves with their own creations, focusing on the enemy at hand. It is said that a puppeteers strength with their techniques is measured by how many puppets they can control at a given time, with the current master of the craft, Chiiyo of the sand, said to be able to control one with each finger.
Saratari
----------
A mysterious clan that lives at the edge of Konoha, close to the dangerous forest of death, the Saratari family is obsessed with the supernatural, with spirits and ghosts. Every family member carries a lantern on a heavy iron pole, called a Buinrou staff. This staff seems sentient of a sort, it will only allow the Saratari to use it, and the light in its lantern will wax and wane as it detects otherworldly spirits about. The Saratari clan are ninjutsu masters, using a combination of ninjutsu and genjutsu to deliver devastating attacks on their enemies. They are also experts with the Kyuuchiyose summoning technique, summoning spirits and demons to attack their enemies.
The clan lives entirely in one huge mansion on the edge of Konoha. People say that the basement of this mansion is somehow connected to hell, and it is true that there are many more people living there than a mansion of that size should be able to support, and non-Saratari are rarely allowed within its walls.
Satoshi
----------
The Satoshi family are all amazing artists, and they use their elaborate paintings both to make a living, and to further their ninja arts. They use a special kind of chakra infused paint, and are trained from an early age to quickly make sketches. These sketches they can then turn to life, making them powerful summoners even without a summoning contract. While they are usually weak in combat themselves, a Satoshi brings with them a host of powerful allies for any situation.
Yamanaka
----------
While they are not experts at close combat, the Yamanaka clan contains some of the finest backup ninja in all of Konoha. Specialists in interrogation, Genjutsu, and capturing opponents alive, the Yamanaka clan makes use of techniques that directly attack an opponents mind. They are capable of controlling the wills of their targets, speaking to their teammates telepathically, and when endangered forcing two enemies to fight each other.
